「more better」は間違い：TOEICがよく出す比較表現のワナ

TOEICでは、難しい単語ではなく、比較の関係を正しく見られるかが問われます。

例えば、次のような表現で迷ったことはありませんか。

more better → 間違い

most fastest → 間違い

more good → 間違い

the most best → 間違い

これらは、意味を強くしようとして余計な語を足してしまうミスです。TOEICでは、このような「二重の比較」がよく選択肢に入ります。

TOEICの基本判断： 2つを比べるなら better。一番を選ぶなら best。more better と most best は選ばない。

空欄を見たら、最初にこの1つを確認します。

この文は「2つを比べている」のか、それとも「一番を選んでいる」のか。

better = 比べる・前より良い

than, compared with, after the update, revised version などが合図になります。

best = 一番良い・最も適切

of all, among the options, the top, overall などが合図になります。

more better が間違いになる理由

better には、すでに「より良い」という意味が入っています。そのため、前に more を足す必要はありません。

間違い： This model is more better than the older version.

正しい形： This model is better than the older version.

間違い： This is the most best proposal.

正しい形： This is the best proposal.

better に向かう合図

than： This model is better than the older version.

compared with： Sales were better compared with last quarter.

前より改善： The updated instructions are better after the review.

best に向かう合図

of all： Of all the candidates, Ms. Lee gave the best interview.

among the options： This plan is the best among the three proposals.

一番適切： The committee selected the best location for the event.

TOEICのビジネス文で見る

This model is better than the older version.

than があるので、2つを比べています。答えは better です。

The Tokyo branch performed better this quarter than last.

今期と前期の比較です。best ではなく better が自然です。

Of all the suppliers, this company offered the best price.

of all があるので、複数の中の一番を選んでいます。

よくあるミス： The new system is more better than the old one.

than は比較の合図ですが、better だけで十分です。

比較語は1つだけでよい

TOEICでは、意味を強くしようとして語を重ねるミスが狙われます。

more better → better だけでよい

most fastest → fastest だけでよい

more smarter → smarter だけでよい

gooder → 存在しない。better を使う

the most best → the best だけでよい

小さな判断： 比較の意味を持つ語を2つ重ねない。1つだけでよい。

空欄の近くにある合図を見る

TOEICでは、空欄の近くに答えの合図があります。特に than と of all は強い合図です。

一番の合図

Of all the suppliers, this company offered the ___ price.

答え： best

速く読む人がしやすいミス

速く読もうとすると、「more を付けると強くなる」「most を付けると一番になる」と考えてしまうことがあります。しかし、better や best にはすでに比較の意味が入っています。

見てはいけない判断： 強く見える語を足す。

見るべき判断： 文は比較か、一番か。比較語は重なっていないか。

なぜ時間制限でまた間違えるのか

学習中は「more better は間違い」と分かっていても、Part 5の短い時間では、意味だけで選ぼうとしてしまいます。

その結果、than や of all などの小さな合図を見落とし、余計な語が付いた選択肢を選びやすくなります。

1秒ツール： than / compared with / 前より改善 = better。of all / among / 一番 = best。

最後の確認

TOEIC Part 5の比較表現は、better、best、more、most の意味を知っているだけでは安定しません。

2つを比べる・前より良い

better を選びます。

複数の中で一番

best を選びます。

そして、more better や most best のように、比較の意味を重ねないこと。合図を見て、余計な語を消す。この判断がTOEICでは大切です。
