can, could, should, must, may, might, will, would Can / Could / Should / Must / May / Might。

must be submitted, may be delayed, could you please, would appreciate, have to, be supposed to

The report must be submitted by Friday.

The delivery may be delayed because of bad weather.

Could you please send the updated invoice?

Employees are supposed to wear identification badges.

必須のルール・義務must, have to, required to などを確認する。
助言・期待される行動should, be supposed to などを確認する。
不確実な結果may be, might be, could be を見る。
Could you please, Would you mind を見る。
ビジネスの丁寧表現would appreciate, would like to を見る。

All expense forms must be submitted by the end of the month.

The final schedule should be confirmed before the meeting.

The shipment may be delayed due to heavy traffic.

The issue could be resolved by updating the software.

2:must be / should be / may be / could be

may be可能性を表す。
might be可能性を表す。

Could you please send the revised file?

Would you mind checking the figures again?

May I speak with the manager?

Would you be able to attend the briefing?

4:would appreciate

We would appreciate your prompt response.

We would appreciate it if you could send the documents by Thursday.

The manager would like to review the proposal before noon.

would appreciate や would appreciate it if は、まとまりとして使われる丁寧なビジネス表現です。

5:have to / be supposed to / ought to

Visitors have to sign in at reception.

Employees are supposed to update their passwords every month.

The team ought to review the safety procedures.

be supposed to と ought to では to が必要です。一方、can, could, should, must, may, might, will, would などの modal の後ろには、通常は to を置かず動詞の原形を続けます。

The documents ___ be signed by a supervisor before submission.

手がかり: signed by a supervisor → documents が動作を受ける。

Quick TOEIC check

1. Compliance is mandatory: the safety report ___ be submitted before the inspection begins.

2. To make the request more tentative and polite, ___ you please send the revised invoice by 3 p.m.?

3. The carrier says a delay is possible but not expected: the delivery ___ be delayed because of severe weather.

4. Company policy makes sign-in compulsory: all visitors ___ to sign in at the front desk.

必須のルール・義務 → must / have to / required to など

助言・期待 → should / be supposed to など

可能性 → may / might / could など
