Both / Either / Neither：2つ・1つ・0で選ぶTOEIC判断

both / either / neither は、まず日本語訳ではなく2つの関係を確認します。

both = 2つとも

2人・2つの物・2つの選択肢の両方に当てはまる。

either = 2つのうち1つ

2つのうち、どちらか一方が可能・問題ない。

neither = 0

2つのうち、どちらも当てはまらない。

判断の順番：2つとも / 1つ / 0 のどれかを見る → and / or / nor など近くの語を見る → 文全体の意味を確認する。

関連する数量表現は、Either / Neither / None と All / Whole でも確認できます。

Both：2つとも

Both reports were finished yesterday.

Both Ms. Tanaka and Mr. Lee will attend the conference.

both A and B は、AとBの両方を含みます。

Either：2つのうち1つ

You may choose either the soup or the salad.

You can submit the form either online or by mail.

either A or B は、2つから一方を選ぶ基本パターンです。このページの「1つ」は判断用のラベルで、Either option is fine. のように「どちらでもよい」を表す使い方もあります。

Neither：2つとも当てはまらない

Neither explanation made sense.

Neither the manager nor the assistant was available.

neither A nor B は、AにもBにも当てはまらないことを示します。
