TOEIC Decision Point

Another vs Other: Choose by One More or Different

In TOEIC Part 5, another and other often appear in simple business sentences. That makes the trap easy to miss.

The fast choice is not “Which word sounds familiar?” The fast choice is: does the sentence mean one more single thing, or different/additional things?

One more single thing = another. Different or additional things = other.

The 7-second choice

Look immediately after the blank. The word after the blank usually tells you the answer.

Another

Use it when the sentence means one more single item: another copy, another meeting, another option, another appointment.

Other

Use it when the sentence points to different or additional items, usually as a group: other departments, other options, other employees.

The signal to remember

Another = one more. Other = different or additional.

This is the MTC move. Do not explain the grammar first. Check the size of the idea: one single extra thing, or a different/additional set.

Please send another copy of the report.
One more copy is needed. Choose another.
Please send the report to other departments.
The sentence points to different departments as a group. Choose other.
We need another meeting to finish the discussion.
One more meeting is needed. Choose another.
The manager spoke with the other team.
The sentence points to a different team. Choose other.

What TOEIC wants you to notice

TOEIC often hides this trap in office sentences about copies, documents, options, meetings, departments, customers, branches, and appointments.

The words are familiar, so the trap feels easy. Your job is to check whether the sentence points to one extra item or a different/additional set.

another copy / another meeting / another appointment
One more single thing. Choose another.
other copies / other meetings / other appointments
Different or additional things. Choose other.
the other printer / the other branch / the other candidate
The word the before the blank often points to the remaining or different one. The blank is other.
another other and an another
These are not the usual TOEIC answers. Another already carries the “an” idea inside it.

Watch the small words

Small words around the blank can make the choice faster.

Choose another

Look for one extra item: another copy, another chance, another question, another week.

Choose other

Look for a different item or group: the other printer, other employees, other options, other locations.

This is not about translating every word. It is about seeing the size of the choice quickly.

Quick TOEIC check

Choose first. Then read the feedback. Use the one-second check: one more single thing, or different/additional?

1. We need ___ copy of the contract for our records.

2. The company is reviewing ___ options before making a decision.

3. One printer is out of order, but the ___ printer is working.

4. The customer asked for ___ appointment next week.

The mistake fast readers make

Fast readers often see a familiar office noun and choose by sound. That is risky because TOEIC may change one small word after the blank.

Weak choice

Choose because the sentence sounds like something you have seen before.

Better choice

Choose by size: one more single thing, or different/additional things.

This is the MTC move: find the signal after the blank, decide the size of the idea, and take the point.

Why this mistake returns under pressure

Many test-takers understand another and other during review, but miss them in timed practice. The problem is usually not only meaning. It is the speed of the decision.

Under pressure, use the same move every time: look after the blank, check whether the sentence means one more single thing or a different/additional set, then choose.

1-second tool: one more single thing = another. Different or additional = other.
