UnlessとIf Not：例外条件か、直接の否定条件かで選ぶTOEIC判断
unless と if not は、どちらも否定条件を表せますが、文の形や条件の関係によって使い分けます。

TOEIC判断ルール： unless を日本語訳だけで決めず、まず except if「その場合を除いて」と言い換えて、条件と結果の関係を確認します。

先に全文を訳そうとせず、空欄の後ろの条件が結果に対する例外・必要条件になっているかを確認します。
Unless：except if と考える
unless は、ある条件を例外として示し、その条件が満たされない場合の結果を表すときに使います。
The meeting will be postponed unless the manager returns by noon.
We cannot process the order unless the form is complete.
The discount will expire unless you renew your membership today.
速い確認：空欄の後ろが結果に対する例外・必要条件なら、unless が合うかを確認します。
If not：直接の否定条件
if not は、「もし〜しないなら」という否定条件をそのまま言うときに分かりやすい形です。
If the printer does not work, please contact IT.
If the invoice is not correct, the accounting team will reject it.
If the client does not approve the design, we will revise it.
速い確認：「〜しない場合」と否定条件を直接述べるなら、if ... not が合うかを確認します。
注意したい否定のパターン
unless の近くに別の否定語があると、条件の論理が分かりにくくなることがあります。
明確： We will proceed unless the client objects.
明確： We will not proceed if the client does not approve.
要注意： We will not proceed unless the client does not object.
否定語が重なるときは、単語だけで決めず、条件と結果の関係を確認します。
空欄周辺の手がかりを見る
will cancel, cannot process, will expire, please contact など、条件と結果の関係を示す手がかりを確認します。

避けたい選び方
時間を測って解くと、unless を単純に if not と置き換えてしまうことがあります。まず except if と言い換えて、条件と結果の関係を確認します。
避けたい考え方：「unless は if not といつも同じ」
