TOEIC語形成 Part 2：頻出ワードフォームトラップ

このページでは、TOEIC Part 5でよく出る語形成トラップをさらに深く見ます。特に effect / affect, efficient / efficiency / efficiently, approve / approval / approved, applicant / application / applicable, decide / decision / decisive のようなセットです。
The new policy had a positive effect on sales.
The new policy will affect sales next quarter.
The team improved operational efficiency.
The team worked more efficiently after the update.
TOEIC判断ルール： 似た単語を見てすぐ選ばないでください。空欄が「ものを表す」「動きを表す」「ビジネス上のものを説明する」「動きの様子を説明する」のどれかを見ます。
7秒で見るポイント
選択肢が似ているときは、意味から入らず、空欄の前後にある合図から見ます。
トラップ1：effect / affect / effective
スペルが似ていて、意味も近いため、TOEICで間違えやすいセットです。
The change had a positive effect on productivity.
The change will affect productivity next quarter.
The advertising campaign was highly effective.
速い確認：effect は「もの・結果」になりやすいです。affect は「動き」になりやすいです。effective は plan, method, campaign などを説明します。
トラップ2：efficient / efficiency / efficiently
システム、業務、チーム、生産性、作業の流れなど、ビジネス場面でよく出ます。
The new software improved office efficiency.
The new software created a more efficient workflow.
The team completed the task more efficiently.
速い確認：efficiency は「もの・結果」です。efficient は「どんなものか」を説明します。efficiently は「どのように動いたか」を説明します。
トラップ3：approve / approval / approved
依頼、提案、予算、申請、管理職の判断などでよく出るセットです。
The manager will approve the request tomorrow.
The project requires final approval.
The approved budget will be announced on Monday.
速い確認：will の後ろなら動きを確認します。final, written, manager’s の後ろでは、approval のような「もの・考え」が必要かもしれません。ビジネス上のものの前なら、approved がそれを説明することがあります。
トラップ4：applicant / application / applicable
採用、フォーム、資格、ルール、手続きでよく出ます。
Each applicant must submit a résumé.
All applications must be submitted by Friday.
The discount is applicable only to online orders.
速い確認：applicant は人です。application は申請書・申請です。applicable は、あるルール・状況に当てはまるという意味です。
トラップ5：decide / decision / decisive / decisively
会議、管理職、提案、判断、問題対応などでよく使われます。
The committee will decide next week.
The final decision will be announced soon.
The manager took decisive action.
The team responded decisively to the problem.
速い確認：decision は「もの・判断」です。decide は動きです。decisive は人や行動を説明します。decisively は、行動がどう行われたかを説明します。
トラップ6：perform / performance / performer
社員評価、業績、機械、システム、イベントなどでよく出ます。
The machine can perform several functions.
The employee’s performance improved this quarter.
The company recognised its top performer.
速い確認：perform は動きです。performance は結果・仕事ぶり・業績・イベントです。performer は、人や組織を指すことがあります。

空欄の近くにある語を見る
語形成トラップは、選択肢をじっと見ていると難しくなります。先に空欄の前後を見てください。
The new policy had a positive ___ on employee morale.
合図： a positive ___ → もの・結果。
答えの方向： effect。
The new policy will ___ employee morale.
合図： will ___ → 動き。
答えの方向： affect。

速く読む人が間違えるポイント
速く読む人は、似た語形成の選択肢を語彙問題として処理しがちです。しかし TOEICでは、空欄の近くにある語が答えの形を決めていることが多いです。
危ない近道：「この単語セットは知っているから、自然に見えるものを選ぶ」
よい近道：「この空欄には、もの・動き・説明・動きの様子のどれが必要か」
時間制限でこのミスが戻る理由
時間がないと、effect と affect、efficient と efficiency がほとんど同じに見えます。安全な動きは、選択肢を見る前に空欄の前後を読むことです。

TOEICの語形成トラップは、単語を1つずつ覚えるだけでは安定しません。空欄の仕事を読むことで解きやすくなります。
